Does Web Video Really Work?

By Brian Doubleday, Greenworks Video Senior Producer & CWCC Member

There’s been a lot of conjecture lately about the effectiveness of adding videos to your website. Several recent reports have shown that there is no longer any doubt about the benefits of well-done video on a website.

Internet Retailer reports that visitors who view product videos are 85% more likely to buy than visitors who do not.   Another report from Internet Retailer came from shoeline.com, who saw a 44% sales conversion increase once they began using video to showcase their lines.

But that’s not the only place where video can help.  Consider SEO, or search engine optimization—it’s how people find you.  In recent years video has moved up to the top of search engine criteria. The highly respected independent research organization, the Forrester Group, recently reported that “Any given video in the index stands about a “50 times better chance of appearing on the first page of results than any given text page”.  And Marketing Week reported in 2011 that video results appeared in 70 out of the top 100 listings.

Are people watching video on retail sites?  They are according to Comscore, who reported an increase in online retail video viewers grew by 40% in a 12 month period, from July 2009 to July 2010, and that 96% of online shoppers watch video.  As for the growth of online video, Cisco predicts that video will increase from 30% of Internet traffic to 90% by the year 2013. Wow.

Don’t think it’s enough just to put a video up on your site and expect the results to roll in.  Since search engines do not scan the actual content of the video, descriptors are the key.   The name you give your video, the meta tags you use to describe it, and the number of places (besides your site) it can be viewed are all important to your video’s success.
